Each year, tens of thousands of inmates in the U.S. are converting to Islam while incarcerated. The latest installment of the "CBS Mornings" series "The State of Spirituality with Lisa Ling" explores why the faith is connecting with so many behind bars.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and Tayba Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving individuals and families impacted by incarceration, today issued a reminder to correctional facilities nationwide that they must provide religious accommodations for Muslim inmates during the holy month of Ramadan.

Tayba Foundation is featured on CBS’s State of Spirituality with Lisa Ling, highlighting its mission to support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals through faith-based education and lifeskills training. The episode features interviews with founder Rami Nsour and former Tayba student Muhammad Amin, showcasing powerful stories of transformation and second chances.

Tayba Foundation is pleased to announce an initial launch of its educational programs in Canada, beginning with the distribution of its Islamic learning resources in prisons across Ontario and British Columbia. This initiative follows productive discussions between Tayba Foundation and prison chaplains from the Canadian Corrections Department.

Sheikh Rami Nsour is a traditionally trained instructor of the Islamic sciences, who has spent many years under the tutelage of Mauritanian scholars both abroad and in his native USA. However, a chance encounter with a former prison inmate in 2002 set him on a journey that eventually led to the establishment of Tayba Foundation

Watching the world around us over the past few years has been nothing short of traumatic, as injustice after injustice came to the forefront of our attention.

“To be honest, akhi, I feel like I’m choosing between the deen and my mother,” he told Tabari, a Tayba counsellor.
